Mountain biker has close encounter with Cape cobra

A mountain biker in Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) has had a surprise encounter with a Cape cobra.

The rider had to hit the brakes when he saw – at the last minute – the snake blocking the trail.

The incident, believed to have occurred on the Tokai trails, was captured by the rider’s on-body camera.

It was later shared by Arrive Alive on their Instagram page, serving as another reminder to outdoor enthusiasts.

As temperatures rise in the province, snakes in the Western Cape become more active, which has led to officials reminding hikers and cyclists to stay vigilant.

While snakes are typically shy and non-aggressive, they can become dangerous if they feel threatened.

Snakes of Table Mountain: What to watch out for

Table Mountain is home to 22 snake species, many of which are venomous, according to Hike Addicts.

Among the most common are the Cape cobra, boomslang and African puff adder.

Encountering a snake is rare, but preparation is key to ensuring a safe experience.

SNAKE ENCOUNTERS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Snake encounters in South Africa are increasing because of the warmer weather.

However, for snake encounters in a residential setting, Western Cape snake-rescue expert, Shaun MacLeod, has the following advice:

  • Keep an eye on the snake but stay at least three metres away at all times
  • Call a snake remover to collect it immediately. Follow the link HERE to find snake removers in your area
  • If a family member is bitten, keep the person calm and quiet. A panic reaction merely spreads the venom through the system
  • Call the 24/7 Poisons Information Helpline on 0861 555 777

Prevention is better than cure.

Another reason for the rise of snake encounters in South Africa is we’ve created homes for snakes around our homes.

Untidy gardens and rubble in backyards are perfect burrows for snakes.

This presents serious danger to your pets, too.

HIKE WITH CAUTION

The warmer summer months are a perfect time to venture into nature, but don’t forget that snakes, spiders and scorpions also enjoy the sunny, summer months.

Always wear closed shoes and long pants/socks when hiking.

If venturing out at night make sure to use a torch.
